Senior Geologist UNOCAL Corporation, Environmental Technical Services 1997 - 2001

Evaluation and collection of hydrologic, geologic, geochemical and geophysical data to remediate soil and groundwater impacted by petroleum or other contaminants. Working individually and in teams, I applied innovative remediation and investigation techniques to complex, ecologically sensitive problems. Proprietary reports authored:

Knott, J. R., 2000, Use of δ15N to document attenuation of nitrate in groundwater, Ivanpah Valley, CA

Knott, J. R., 2000, Using stable isotopes (D, 18O and 15N) and major elements as groundwater tracers, Ivanpah Valley

Associate Engineering Geologist

California Dept. of Transportation; Division of New Technology, Materials & Research 1989 - 1992

I was responsible for assessment of geologic hazards, design criteria and foundation design for seismic-retrofitting and general construction of over 300 highway bridges in the eastern and southern California areas.  Conducted exploration programs; collected and analyzed in situ and laboratory data with the final goal of producing a written report concerning the feasibility and design of buildings and bridges. Examples of reports authored:

Knott, J. R., 1991, Engineering geology of the 215/10 Interchange with respect to the San Jacinto fault zone, San Bernardino County, California for CALTRANS.

Knott, J. R., 1990, Foundation Report for the 5/56 Interchange, including evaluation of deep liquefaction of late Pleistocene sediments, San Diego County, California for CALTRANS.

Engineering Geologist

Foundation Engineering Company, Inc. 1988 - 1989

G.C. Masterman & Associates, Inc. 1984 - 1988

Designed and conducted studies to obtain the necessary surface and subsurface geological and geophysical data for the planning, design and construction of the foundations for buildings and other structures.  Directed and trained personnel to perform soil mechanics laboratory and field-related duties.  Prepared geologic maps, cross sections and reports.  Conducted numerous investigations to evaluate landslide and earthquake ground-rupture hazard.

EXPERIENCE
RESEARCH
My research interests in Quaternary geology and geomorphology are centered in Death Valley, but I have also participated in studies of coastal dunes and the Sierra Nevada of California. My collaborations over the last 10 years have focused on the late Neogene stratigraphy, Lake Manly history, and geomorphology of Death Valley. In past studies, I and my colleagues have used a variety of geochronologic methods including tephrochronology, paleomagnetics, cosmogenic radionuclides, luminescence, radiocarbon and soil development to support geologic mapping.
